The lost SA game developer interviews part 1

Postby Oliver » Mon Feb 15, 2010 7:51 pm

Hey peeps!

I just wanted to let everybody know that over the course of the next few weeks, I'm going to be posting up a series of 'lost' interviews I conducted with a diverse group of South African game developers last year, from which selected quotes were used to contribute to a Gamasutra article I wrote (also last year). (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/4098/the_south_african_game_development_.php)

What's special about these particular interviews is that they're going to be posted up in full, rather than showing up in chopped up quote form like they did in the Gamasutra article (also last year), so you'll be finding out about each individual's beginnings in game development, their opinions on the state of the local development scene, and how things can move forward, plus *much* more.

One interview will be going up every week Friday on El33tonline.com (a local videogame news, reviews and previews site). The first interview with Travis Bulford (Celestial/Twilyt and Toxic Bunny) has already been posted, so check it out!(http://www.el33tonline.com/past_editorial/2010/2/12/the_lost_south_african_game/)

These interviews are a treasure trove of information and history for game developers in South Africa, and I personally feel it would be beneficial if members of the local game development community read them to find out about the realities of the local scene. Even though they're just over a year old, all of the interviews are just as relevant today as they were then, if not more so (if that's possible).

Tanks tanks!

That's great Oliver!

Infact...
Remember I asked you last year after the article's not-so-new anymore to post it on your SAGD Journal blog?
Could you post the full article over on SAGD as well?

Also, I challenge you to create a new Journal called "The lost SA game developer interviews" and posting each interview in full on your SAGD Journal too, obviously adding a source link for each one's origin on http://www.el33tonline.com.

Whats your thoughts?

By the way... one thing that stood out for me in Travis' interview is this statement:
Local investors still donâ?Tt take games as a serious market. I think it will take a local team making it really big before they do.

Thats what I'm going to attempt this year. ;)

I'll see what I can do, given my schedule - it's bad enough preparing one article for one site, but then doing it all over again (plus the full Gamasutra article) would be heavy.

I can do it, just don't expect them, like, tomorrow ;).

Hello again!

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the next two entries into 'The Lost SA Game Developer Interviews' series have gone up on El33tonline.com, where you can read interviews with Luke Lamothe from Luma Arcade and Danny Day from QCF Design/Game.Dev.

Happy reading!
