
MakeHuman(TM) is an open source (so it's completely free), innovative and professional software for the modelling of 3-Dimensional humanoid characters. I played with this two days ago and was able to successfully import a creation into blender.
The other program is QAvimator

QAvimator is a Qt port of Vince Invincible's avimator, a bvh animation editor, created for use in the 3D metaverse Second Life. The project is still in early alpha stage and may or may not work on your system.
